| Winemaker Profile | Steven Canter, Winemaker
Steven Canter began his hands-on wine career with DeLoach Vineyards in Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. He also worked for small wineries in the Napa Valley, Amador and Mendocino counties. Steven's interest in wine took him further abroad to work a vintage with Foris Winery in Southwest Oregon and multiple vintages at Torbreck Vintners in Australia's famed Barossa Valley, along with Beaumont Vineyards in South Africa, Corte Pavone in Tuscany, and Tenuta Loacker in the Sud Tyrol-Alto Adige region of Italy. Wine Philosophy From his broad global experience, Steven's personal approach to winegrowing and winemaking was formed and can be stated simply as great wine is truly made in the vineyard. I resist the urge to mess with the grapes anymore than necessary. He also subscribes to a philosophy of never assume that you know what is going on in the vineyards as Nature is far more complex than we can ever predict. Steven believes pro-active organic and biodynamic farming leads to more vibrant, better tasting fruit and he is always striving for perfection to grow the best grapes from the terrior to make the best wine possible. "I feel very privileged to have arrived at Quivira where I am able to apply both my personal and professional skills to take part in the growth of a world-class wine estate." ---- Steven Canter, Winemaker July 2006 |
